The name Touba you can see at thousands of buses and taxis throughout Senegal. All refer to the holy city in the heart of Senegal. It is the headquarters of the brotherhood of the Mouriden, a unique African form of Islam. The founder of this brotherhood of Mouriden, Cheikh Amadou Bamba (died 1927), worked from the city of Touba, where he now lies buried.
Touba is the seat of the Khalief, the head of all Mouriden and also the lower Mara Bouts (a kind of guide between the believer and God).
For anyone who wants to understand the Islam in Senegal must visit Touba.
The city has the largest (and according to many the most beautiful) mosque in Africa.
