Compared with eastern and southern Africa, Senegal has a small range of big animals.
Usually that is not the main reason for a visit to the country.
There are a number of parks where the combination of Flora and Fauna is worth visiting.
Here they are listed and briefly explained.
Djoudj National Park (160 km2)
Is located on the northern border with Mauritania and among the top 3 of bird parks in the world.
Easy to visit from Saint Louis.
The park is open from October to April.
Niokolo Koba National Park (8800km2)
Located in the southeast of Senegal is by far the largest nature reserve of the country. For several animals (lions, elephants and panthers), this is the last remaining habitat in West Africa. These animals are also not present in large numbers.
The road from Tambacounda to Kedougou (233 km) carry straight through the park. There are several accommodation options in the park, which only can be visited by car.
The park is open from December 1 to June 1.
Delta du Saloum National Park (730 km2)
The delta of the Sine Saloum and the park is only by pirogue to visit. It consists of a labyrinth of creeks with mangrove forests, where many birds live. The park is open all year.
Basse Casamance National Park (40 km2)
In the south of the country on the border with Guinea you can find this jungle where a number of animal life. Given the uncertain situation in this part of the country is difficult to visit the park. Normally open from December to June.
Langue de Barbarie National Park (20 km2)
Named after the eponymous peninsula in Saint Louis, where birds and turtles have their nesting. Easy to reach from Saint Louis Park or Gandiol. Open all year.
Madeleine National Park (4.5 km2)
A group of islands located just before the capital Dakar. Beautiful rocks that serve as breeding seabirds.
